03 — Traditions
Rooted in the Sub-Saharan diaspora, the Gnaoua are masters of trance music — their lila ceremonies invoke ancestral spirits through hypnotic rhythms of the guembri bass lute, qraqeb iron castanets, and collective chant. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019.
Celebrated on January 13th, Yennayer marks the Amazigh agricultural new year — a festival of family gatherings, ritual meals of couscous and dried fruit, and prayers for fertility of the land. Officially recognised as a national holiday in Morocco since 2023.
A thundering display of horsemanship where teams of riders charge in perfect formation and fire their flintlock rifles in unison at full gallop. Rooted in medieval military exercises, Tbourida is performed at moussems across Morocco and was inscribed on UNESCO's list in 2021.
05 — Art & Music
Morocco's creative soul pours through music festivals, craft fairs, and visual arts events that bridge centuries of tradition with contemporary expression.
